Here’s a joke: what do you call a Kiwi with a hundred family members?

A shepherd.

Here’s another one: did you hear about the winner of the New Zealand beauty contest?

Me neither.

Alright, we’re finished. Don’t worry Kiwis, we love you!

Despite our bickering and rivalry, Australians and New Zealanders are practically family.

We share a language, much of our modern history, and at one stage, there was even a proposal for New Zealand to become part of Australia – in fact, Australia’s constitution still leaves an open invitation for New Zealand to become an Australian state.

The similarities are so great, that in some cases Kiwis have been detained by immigration officials who seemingly don’t know New Zealand is it’s own country!

While Kazakh immigration might not accept you, your brothers and sisters in Australia will welcome you with open arms.

And if there are any nurses among you looking for work in Australia, we’re more than willing to take them in!

Not convinced? You will be! That’s why we’ve put together this list of reasons why New Zealand nurses should consider taking their careers to Australia.

1. There are plenty of nursing jobs

Here’s a little-known fact about Australia: 1.5 million peopleone in eight Australian residents – are employed in health.

Medical professions in general are in high demand on our side of the Tasman, with our health sector experiencing record growth.

And this number looks set to continue growing.

Of course, with the booming health industry comes an increase in demand for qualified nurses. Whether that’s general, mental health, midwifery or forensic nursing, there are opportunities for both new and established nurses to find work in both public and private facilities.

With openings in every stream of nursing so close to New Zealand, there’s never been a better time to be a qualified Kiwi nurse!

2. The paperwork is a breeze

One of the most stressful parts of planning a holiday or working overseas is making sure that all your paperwork is up-to-date. Visas, sponsorships, passports – it can all be a huge headache!

One of the best things about the closeness between Australians and Kiwis is that in most cases, New Zealand passport holders can travel to Australia without applying for a visa in advance. All New Zealand passport holders qualify for an automatic Special Category Visa (SCV) upon entry.

This entitles you to live and work in Australia indefinitely, without having to visit an embassy or fill any forms. So if you find the nursing position of your dreams across the Tasman, getting started is as simple

It mightn’t sound like a big deal, but this offers New Zealanders a level of freedom and citizens of others countries don’t have.

3. It’s close

Yep, just 3.5 hours on a plane is all it takes to reach Australia’s east coast from New Zealand.

Combined with the ease of entering Australia, New Zealand nurses can open the doors to a range of options that other nationalities don’t have.

  • Are nursing jobs drying up in the land of the white cloud? Book a flight across the ditch without the need to visit an embassy
  • Feeling homesick? Take a flight home for the weekend, without worrying about how you’re going to return to your job and life in Australia
  • Found a short-term contract down under? Be in Australia on the same day, ready to start working

4. Your New Zealand nursing qualification is recognised here

All international nurses have to apply with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practise as nurses in Australia.

That said, there is a silver lining: Kiwi nurses can easily transfer their New Zealand nursing certification to Australia. All you have to do is register with NMBA and your application will usually be fast-tracked over applicants from other countries.
